Christmas Dinner 2008

It's my 5th Christmas celebration in Qatar. Being a Muslim country, Christmas here is just another ordinary day. It is noticeable though that shopping malls have more elaborate decorations now as compared to my first Christmas here in 2004. Also, many shops are now selling Christmas decors and goodies. It's really good that Qatar is tolerant of Christmas celebration. However, Christmas here is still dry and sad.

I filed for leave of absence in order to get a day off from work on Christmas day. Other companies such as my husband's and my brother's declared a holiday. Since everyone still went to work on the 24th, we didn't have time to prepare Noche Buena so we just had dinner at Bennigan's. Nothing special at Bennigan's - I just wanted to dine somewhere we haven't been before. The menu is very much like Chili's, Apple Bee's and Friday's. Interestingly, I just found out that Bennigan's company-owned restaurants in United States have closed down after filing for bankruptcy in July 2008 although franchises remained open.

Christmas Eve Dinner

After dinner, we went to corniche to take photos. Corniche again? Yes - because there's no other place to go to.

Nothing compares to the Christmas celebration in the Philippines but as the saying goes, the most important thing is being with your loved-ones during Christmas. I am so lucky that I have a family here to celebrate Christmas with. I hope you also had a meaningful and blessed Christmas. May you have a great year ahead!

Holiday Cookies

One of the things I've always wanted to learn is baking. Finally, in 2005, I attended some of Heny Sison's short courses. I enjoy baking. Perhaps, it's because baking is much like a chemistry experiment and I love chemistry! Like a lab experiment, baking requires exact measurement of ingredients, proper mixing and proper oven temperature in order to yield a fantastic product!

Holiday Cookies

clockwise: chocolate chips, chocolate crinkles, oatmeal and peanut butter cookies

Since I've been busy the whole year and I didn't bake much, I made up for it this holiday season. I baked four (4) types of cookies and two (2) recipes each. I brought some to our Office and shared some to our friends. Everybody loved it. The favorites are choco chips and choco crinkles, which are my personal favorites too. By the way, I found out that choco chips cookies have interesting history.

While I love baking, and I get inspired with all the praises I receive, it's a bit time consuming to prepare the ingredients and to clean the utensils used (hehehehe!!!) so I guess the next cookies overload will not be soon.

What is your favorite cookie?

Merry Christmas!

Thank you for all the greetings, visits and comments! My greetings post is somewhat late already but today is still Christmas so it's not yet late. I hope you had a meaningful and blessed Christmas. I also hope 2009 will be a great year despite the financial crisis. Let's hope for the best and have a positive attitude always.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

LP - Eksayted

LP - Eksayted

Family Picture noong nagbakasyon kami noong July 2008

May makopa, bayabas, suha, atis, balimbing, caimito, langka, granada, niyog, sampaloc, duhat, anunas, mangga at iba pa.

Quotes by Bob Ong

My friend sent me some quotes by Bob Ong thru e-mail. They were really funny but very true. Bob Ong is a Filipino contemporary author who uses conversational Filipino in his writings. It's not his real name and so far his identity remains anonymous up to now. He has published six books including:

  • ABNKKBSNPLKo!
  • Bakit Baligtad Magbasa ng Libro Ang Mga Pilipino?
  • Ang Paboritong Libro ni Hudas
  • Alamat ng Gubat
  • Stainless Longganisa
  • Macarthur

I have read ABNKKBSNPLKo at Bakit Baligtad Magbasa ng Libro Ang Mga Pilipino but that was ages ago. I can't remember anymore what the book is all about. On my next vacation, I'll bring those two books here and buy the other books also. And the quotes...

PAG-IBIG

BUHAY (IN GENERAL)

"Pare, isa kang totoong tao at walang halong kasinungalingan. In English, FACT you, pare. Totoo ka. In English, FACT you!"

Today is not my day...

Today is not a very good day...

Missed Appointment
I was so upset I missed an appointment this morning. I was supposed to attend a safety training at 8 AM at client's plant located 80 kilometers from Doha. At normal speed, it's about one hour travel from our office and additional 15 to 20 minutes for validating the gate pass at the main security office and securing visitors pass at the plant site. Unfortunately, I was caught in a very heavy traffic on my way to our office - almost not moving at all. It was terrible...horrible... Inside my car, I was so frustrated/upset/annoyed/irritated/helpless. It didn't help that my fuel indicator is already lighted. I can't believe it took me an hour to reach our office to pick-up my colleagues - a travel that usually takes less than 30 minutes or about 15 minutes during not so busy days.

The heavy traffic I experienced is unusual but when I talk to my colleagues they told me that the traffic situation had really gone worse after Ramadan. Apparently, if I have an 8 AM appointment at a client site, I have to get out of Doha before 6:30 AM, otherwise I won't make it on time. I wasn't aware of that because I usually leave home at 8 AM during regular work day and a few months ago, the traffic situation is not as bad. I wonder how much worse it's going to be in the coming months. I hope the government will do something about it!

So what do you do when stuck in a heavy traffic?

Exchage Rate
I passby the money exchange before heading home. Now, it's only QR 4.58 Riyal to Euro compared to QR 5.60 Riyal to Euro when I went to Europe during the Eid. That means, I lost about 20 Euros for every 100 Euros I exchanged last September. I could have bought a lot of souvenirs with that money. Sayang naman diba? Hmpt!

Scary

LP - Maalaala mo kaya?

Hehehehehe. May dalawang pisong buo pa noon - yong may niyog.
Kayo anong naaalala nyo noong 80s and 90s?

To all husbands who are married to a career woman...

I found this (poem?) in Qatar Living sometime ago. I wanted to share it with you but I was hesitant because the autor is unknown and therefore, I cannot give him proper credit. Some punctuations seemed misplaced but I did not bother to correct them as I am not good at it too.

This piece is for all husbands who are married to a career woman. Any thoughts?

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Tomorrow you may propose a working woman, but you should marry with these facts firmly grounded in your mind...

Here is a girl, who is as much educated as you are; who is earning almost as much as you do;

One, who has dreams and aspirations just as you have because she is as human as you are;

One, who has never entered the kitchen in her life just like you or your Sister haven't, as she was busy in studies and competing in a system that gives no special concession to girls for their culinary achievements;

One, who has lived and loved her parents & brothers & sisters, almost as much as you do for 20-25 years of her life;

One, who has bravely agreed to leave behind all that, her home, people who love her, to adopt your home, your family, your ways and even your family name;

One, who is somehow expected to be a master-chef from day #1, while you sleep oblivious to her predicament in her new circumstances, environment and that kitchen;

One, who is expected to make tea, first thing in the morning and cook food at the end of the day, even if she is as tired as you are, maybe more, and yet never ever expected to complain; to be a servant, a cook, a mother, a wife, even if she doesn't want to; and is learning just like you are asto what you want from her; and is clumsy and sloppy at times and knows that you won't like it if she is too demanding, or if she learns faster than you;

One, who has her own set of friends, and that includes boys and even men at her workplace too, those, who she knows from school days and yet is willing to put all that on the back-burners to avoid your irrational jealousy, unnecessary competition and your inherent insecurities; Yes, she can drink and dance just as well as you can, but won't, simply because you won't like it, even though you say otherwise;

One, who can be late from work once in a while when deadlines, just like yours, are to be met;

One, who is doing her level best and wants to make this most important relationship in her entire life a grand success, if you just help her some and trust her;

One, who just wants one thing from you, as you are the only one she knows in your entire house - Your unstinted support, Your sensitivities and most importantly - Your understanding, or love, if you may call it.

But not many guys understand this... Please appreciate "HER"

LP - Kadiliman

LP - Kadiliman

Yes, that's me. This photo was taken in the midst of darkness. My fellow photographer friends was experimenting on taking photos using flash light as the only source of light. They wanted the photo to have a ghost effect. Do you think I can be ghost model?

Swamped!

Reports, deadlines, follow-ups...I'm swamped! I am so looking forward to the upcoming weekend. I want to have a relaxing whole body massage, foot spa and facial (although I don't do facial here coz I haven't found someone whom I can entrust my face with). I think I also want to go to the beach. Hmmmm...

How do you re-energize yourself after a tiring week?

LP - Liwanag

I just came back from a short holiday in the City of Lights, which is the theme for this week's Litratong Pinoy meme.

This is the Arc de Triomphe taken from the Champs Elysee.

Paris

This is the famous Eiffel Tower with blue lighting at night

According to Wikipedia, Paris was nicknamed "City of Lights" because of its fame as the center of education and ideas and its early adoption of street lighting. Paris is beautiful at night and very romantic. I won't get tired of going back to this city again and again. Entries related to my recent vacation in Europe is in my travel blog.

Two Spaces After a Period

I'm not a perfectionist but sometimes, it bothers me that blogger formats my post to a single space after a period even if I actually type two spaces. Not that it's so much of a big deal. It's just that in my Office we follow the two spaces after a period rule. I wonder why blogger do it? Perhaps, to save memory?

After the Vacation...

We're back! Walter and I immensely enjoyed the great museums, churches and monuments and the time we spent together. Ofcourse, with Sheila and her mom, the entire trip from France to Italy is more fun. But then, after an enjoyable trip, oftentimes, you feel like you need another vacation to re-energize yourself. I’m sure you know that feeling of wanting to extend your vacation so you can sleep all you want, chill out at home or have a chat with friends. That’s exactly what I wanted to do when we came back early Saturday morning. But then, I don’t have the luxury of time to do that. I need to get things going in order to accomplish my long list of to dos because I need to report for work the following day.

It’s ironic that after you take a vacation to relax; you stress-out yourself trying to catch-up and make-up for times you’ve been away. As soon as we reached home, I immediately unpacked our suitcases. I segregated our dirty laundry and loaded them into the washing machine. I also organized the souvenirs and the presents, Then, I check my office and personal e-mails and my feeds. I received hundreds of e-mail while away and I also accumulated almost 800 of unread feeds. It’s amazing that some of my favorite bloggers were able to post around 40 to 70 blogs in a span of two weeks. Whew! It’s down to 600 now but new feeds are added everyday so I don’t know if I can even reduce my unread feeds to half anytime soon.

Sounds hectic? That’s not all; there is something else which can be a little bit depressing – calculating the travel expenses and up-coming credit card bills. Those expenses were planned but still, it's a significant amount so I'm thinking of ways to recover them. Right now, I am seriously considering buying and retailing of Wholesale Clothing as a source of additional income and to supplement my monthly salary and fund my future travels. The upcoming Christmas Season, is very good opportunity to earn from selling children’s, women’s and men’s clothes. Buying at cheap wholesale prices, I would be able to sell them at much affordable and competitive retail prices.

After pondering on the money thoughts and future travel plans, I slept for nearly 5 hours. I woke up before 7 pm, with just enough time to prepare for watching live Pinoy Rock Band concert. I couldn’t pass because my hubby already bought the tickets long time ago. I went to work the following day still feeling a bit tired. But it's alright. Traveling is one great experience I don't want to miss especially if Walter is with me!

Photos and write-up about the travel is coming soon so watch-out for them. How about you? Do you also like traveling? How do you deal with after-travel stress?

I'm fuming mad since this afternoon because of an incident at the Philippine Embassy in Doha, Qatar. Actually, I did not go there personally. Our liaison officer brought my diploma to the Philippine Embassy for authentication. However, the Philippine Embassy refused saying that my diploma needs a "red ribbon" before they can authenticate it.

What is that f*c*i*g "red ribbon"? When documents such as Birth Certificate (BC) , Marriage Certificate (MC), Diploma and Employment Certificates are brought to Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila for authentication, a red ribbon is attached to the document along with an authentication certificate. Most OFWs are required to produce DFA-authenticated documents as part of their application process - mostly for visa processing. Take note (I don't know if it's still required today) before bringing your document to DFA, you need to have it authenticated in Malacanang first - not to mention that BCs and MCs are already authenticated by NSO. Take note also that DFA authentication is valid for six (6) months only! I believe DFA also requires that BCs and MCs from NSO to be less than six months old! If I remember it right, authentication fee alone used to cost P100/document at DFA back in 2004. Imagine how much revenue they generate from this crappy authentication thing. With hundreds (perhaps thousands) of applicants everyday, how are they able to verify all those documents?...and diplomas? What is the authority of DFA to confirm a diploma is real? I doubt if they even verify from schools.

Now why I am fuming mad? Because my Filipina colleagues also had their diplomas authenticated sometime ago but the Philippine Embassy did not require the f*c*i*g red ribbon. I don't understand why DFA authentication certification is being required now. I also don't understand why they accepted my NBI Clearance and not my diploma even the original was shown to them? Why the inconsistency in their procedures? Do they realize how much trouble it is to get it done? and the cost? The Qatar Labor Department only needs an Embassy Stamp. The don't care about the f*ck*ng red ribbon so what is their f*c*i*g problem?

They are wasting my time. You see, the Philippine Embassy regular timings is 8AM to 4PM. The employees are (sometimes? always?) late because of traffic! Why am I not surprised? I wonder why I can be at the embassy before 8 AM and they can't come on time? Every time I need to go to the embassy I have to excuse myself from work. Actually, all OFWs had to excuse themselves from work because there's no other time. They close at 4 pm and because of Ramadan, they now close at 2 PM. WTF! They are not even fasting! I just submitted my Schengen Visa application at the French Embassy and they have regular schedule. Honestly, I am not the only one complaining here. I hear a lot of complaints regarding the rude behaviour of employees at the Philippine Embassy in Qatar but also in other countries. Why do they have to be rude to fellow Filipinos? They are supposed to be providing services - good services to Filipino citizens who deserves to be treated well. If their bad behavior is because of too much work and less pay, they should quit their job. They are government SERVANTS and they are supposed to SERVE period. I was once a government employee and I'm proud to say that I served my countrymen well.

Oh well, I'm too damn furious at the moment. The red ribbon thing is ridiculous! Now, I want to know how are Philippines Embassies and their employees in other countries. If you have any good or bad experience from the Philippine Embassy here in Qatar or in other countries, please share it here so that other people and the Philippine Government will know how the supposedly government servants are behaving!

Stressful Morning!

What could be worse than having flat tires in the middle of a highway early in the morning? I was clueless that I am already running on flat tires. While traversing the main road, the passenger of the car passing me made some circling signs. I did not understand it but I sensed that there is something wrong so I decided to stop at the shoulders. I felt so down and helpless when I saw my tire rim is almost touching the ground - that means I won't be able to move my car anymore. Grabe talaga, nakakaloka! I was stressed!

First, I don't know how to change tires and even if I can do it, I'd rather not! I also don't know of any company/agency whom I can call for assistance. I'm lucky that somebody was willing to help me. Actually, two people helped me.
Second, I found out I don't have a jack and the nearest tire shop will not open until 9:30 AM. I need to be at the French Embassy before 10:30 AM to submit our Schengen visa application. I can't waste 1 1/2 hours and wait for the tire shop to open. But I'm really lucky this morning. A Filipino guy passing by - lent me his jack. After 15 minutes or so, my car was already fixed. Yey!
Before I sped away, I gave QR 50 ($1 = QR3.65) to the two guys who fixed my tires. I don't have a smaller bill but I don't mind. My QR 50 will not inflate my tires and it will not give me a Schengen visa. It was a stressful morning but not enough to dampen my spirit and ruin my day!
Do you know how to change flat tires?

Waste of Money

We subscribed to TFC pay per view to watch Caregiver. But there's a problem with signal. The signal goes off for few seconds every few minutes. How irritating! We paid QR40 for a crappy service/movie showing. The main TFC channel doesn't have the same problem; therefore, the problem is only on the pay per view streaming. I believe we deserve a refund (which I don't think will happen). If we experience the same problem next week, we probably won't subscribe to TFC pay per view until I receive positive feedback from other subscribers. Grrrr....such a waste of money!

Ramadan Starts Today!

Ramadan Kareem!

For our Muslim brothers, Ramadan is the most awaited time of year. What to expect during Ramadan:

  • Restaurants and shops are closed during the day. This can be frustrating at times although they open in the evening til midnight or early morning. Expect horrible traffic in the evening.
  • Shortened workhours. This is good if the company is implementing the mandated 6-hour work day for both Muslims and non-Muslims.
  • New timing for rush hours. Since workhours is shorter, traffic between 12 noon to 2 pm and in the evening is horrible.
  • Banks and offices start late and close early although some bank branches are open in the evening.
  • Expect supermarkets to be full as people buy food to prepare sumptous meal to break the fast (Iftar).
  • Many promotions. It's a good time to buy a new car.
  • Most importantly, do not eat, drink and smoke in public.
To know more about the celebration of Ramadan, check my previous post here.

To Monetize or Not?

I've been toying with the idea of monetizing my blog by writing paid posts, just like other bloggers. They say, if you are diligent, you can earn substantial income from writing sponsored posts. But one thing is preventing me from doing so...I'm a bit hesitant to mix paid posts with my regular posts. Silly isn't it? I mean everyone is doing it and here I am, hesitating for some wierd silly reason.

Tell me, what do you think of blogs with paid posts?

How I've Been?

Life is Good!

I'm defintely fine. I just thought of taking a break because to tell you frankly, I had this feeling of not wanting to blog anymore during the past few weeks. If you notice my last post was July 4th, almost two months ago. That post was actually a description for my Birthday Photo Album which got longer so I decided to make it a blog entry. My June posts were mostly for Litratong Pinoy. You see, I haven't really written personal posts lately.

I was also feeling senti (short for sentimental) back in April and May. I don't know how it happened. One day, I just woke up longing to go home. I told my husband I am not going to join him in the US (we thought he is going to US) - I just wanted to go home. Our original plan is to skip Philippines this year so we can visit other countries but as they say, there's no place like home. Without another thought, I booked tickets and spent two weeks with my family. I did not announce this vacay to my friends because I really wanted to spend time with my family. If any of my friends is reading this, SORRY guys! Next year is going to be a regular one-month vacation and I promise to see you all of you.

Besides my short vacation, there's nothing much to blog about. It's so hot and humid here in Doha - we don't go out much. Ramadan is also about to begin around 1st of September so the next four of weeks is going to be dull and everything will be in a slow and lazy mood. Good thing is we are only required to work 6 hours per day during Ramadan. Hopefully the Ramadan season will be an opportunity to get back to regular blogging.

How about you, how have you been lately? Are there times you wanted to stop your regular work/routine and just chill out?

I'm still here...

Me

Well, I'm still here - just quiet. I've been experiencing blog withdrawal during the past weeks. I think I'm slowly overcoming it. I hope to start writing posts soon.

To those who are asking, how I've been - don't worry, I am very much fine. Thanks for asking.

To those who left messages and comments, Thank you so much. I apologize if I am not able to respond.

31st Birthday Dinner at Sharq Village and Spa

On my 31st birthday, we had dinner at Al Liwan Buffet (Lebanese) Restaurant at Sharq Village and Spa. Our first choice was Intercontinental's Fish Market Restaurant but we'd like to try a new place and my husband have been wishing to go to Sharq Village. When I inquired at Al Liwan, I was assured that they have an international menu for the buffet and on-the-spot barbeque and seafood grillling during weekend dinners so we decided to give it a try.

FOOD - The on-the-spot seafood griiling (though limited) is enough for us to be satisfied. The appetizers, main entree, dessert including the barbeque are lebanese (perhaps? I'm guessing since it's a Lebanese Restaurant). Honestly, I have no idea what is the difference between arabic, turkish, syrian or lebanese dish!. I was a bit upset because I was expecting international cuisine. Minus the grilled seafood - it's really a waste of money (my personal opinion) unless you are dining to experience a cozy ambience. You can always dine at a good arabic, lebanese or turkish resto for the same type of food (even better - more tasty) at a much cheaper cost. But as I've said, the on-the-spot seafood grill already made our night.

SERVICE - Service is good but it's a bit annoying to be asked every three minutes if we're done with our plates especially when there's little food left in the plate. I know it's their job - part of their SOP to ask the question but every three minutes is too much. The waiters also fold the napkins (I don't understand why?)everytime we stand-up to get more food, which made us very uncomfortable.

The PLACE - The ambience is cozy and the place would have been a nice photography subject. Unfortunately, it's not allowed to take photos especially if DSLR camera is used. The reason - Because it might be PUBLISHED! Duh? Not wanting to get into trouble, we stopped taking photos but asked permission to photograph the beach area. They allowed us to take photos of the beach but not cabanas and chairs because those are hotel properties. The security watched us as we take photos of the beach. It was awful. I felt like we're criminals who need to be escorted and watched. We left very upset. The place is nice but the architecture is not unique so what's the fuss? I mean, it was designed as an old arabic village that is made to look cozy. Arabic village inspired buildings/ hotels can also be found in UAE, Oman and photography are allowed in those places. The beach is not even a nice one.

The VERDICT - I don't think I'll come back unless somebody or my company (which is unlikely) is footing the bill. For me, Intercon is still the best!

LP - Kalayaan

Kitty Go Blogs

Yep, you read it right. She just started two blogs Teaching Giselle and
When Chick Hits the Fan. She said, her blogs will be her inspiration in writing her third book. Her books were instant hits although I'm yet to read them because my friend whom I've asked to bring the books here in Qatar is still in the Philippines.

I don't think I need to introduce Kitty Go anymore. Most bloggers know her and if you are a fan or interested with her gossips or just plain curious, I'm sure that you will check her blog!

LP- Mahangin

It's a windy day, very obvious ins't it? This photo was taken during a sand dunes bashing trip in the Qatari desert. Walter, my two brothers and my uncle are with me. As the wind blows, the temperature gets cooler ak.a wind-chill effect.

Rice is Now a Luxury!

I went to the supermarket today to drop my coupons for the car raffle. I also bought some rice, juice and eggs as we are already running out of supply. I have this habit of not checking the prices (yeah, I know it's bad) when buying regular items like rice. When the cashier scanned the bar code, I was surprised that the price of my preferred rice brand (Royal Umbrella from Thailand) increased from less than QR 50/10-kg last month to QR 69.50/10-kg. I just can't believe the price increase is more than QR 20/10-kg bag - almost 40% in a span of one month. I don't know if the importation price is really high or the importer is taking advantage of the low supply and high demand for Thai rice. According to the Filipina cashier, the rice importers already warned that the price of rice will continue to increase in the following months due to global rice shortage. In fact, some people are already panic-buying so I did a little bit of hoarding too.

In the past, Royal Umbrella is being sold at QR 29-30/10-kg bag only. A few months ago, the price is increased to around QR 40 after being out of stock for a few weeks. Then last month the price has increased again to QR 50. At the current price of QR 69.50 - I think eating rice is now a luxury! I'm sure this will affect the food budget of rice-eaters particularly Pinoys. My only consolation is it's a good motivation for me to cut down my rice consumption :)

The price of most goods here have gone up from 30 - 150% and honestly, I am bothered that situation may worsen in the next months. Some supermarkets promised to keep the prices of certains goods but for how long? Many expats already decided go home because of sky-rocketing rents and continued price increase of consumer goods and food supply. But, what to do?

1 US$ = QR 3.65

LP - Tubig

Damit

I must say I am an observant person. Besides, it's already summer here!

So far, dalawa sila na laging nag-uulit ng suot. Pareho silang taga-Oyropa, isang Pranses at isang Ingles.

Keyk

Napanood namin ang Golden Compass, Spiderwick Chronicles at Iron Man.

So ayon, busy talaga ang lola nyo.

Poll

May iba ba itong ibig sabihin? Mga tapat at prangkang sagot lamang po. Maraming Salamat!

Senti Ako

Four years na ako dito sa Qatar at katatapos lang ipa-renew ng residence permit ko for another two years.

Gaano nyo sila kadalas dalawin?

Not Feeling Well

I'm not feeling well :( I woke up with a slight fever and couldn't get up from the bed. I called my office to inform them I can't come for work. It would have been a good opportunity to catch up with my posts but I also couldn't stand using computer for long periods. I hope to be better soon!

LP - Hugis Pahaba

LP-Hugis Pahaba
